General
Walk-in coolers and freezers are assembled using prefabricated modular panels. These panels consist of metal clad expanded polystyrene or urethane (polyisocyanurate) insulation. They are designed for fast and easy field assembly with convenient disassembly for relocation or enlargement.

Panels are available in 4" and 6" thickness. Full width panels are 47" wide, with narrower panels in various widths as required. Enclosure prices are based on 11 3/4" increments, but actual dimensions can be any size to accommodate customer requirements. One piece panels are available in lengths up to 32 feet.

Panel Fasteners
The wall panels are joined together by cam-locks embedded in the panel edges.   These cam-locks consist of a locking are mounted on a rotating cam anchored in the tongue edge and a steel pin anchored in the groove edge.  By rotating the locking arm with  a hex wrench, the arm engages over the pin, and the rotation of the cam draws the panels tightly together.  The cam-locks are rotated from inside the walk-in through access ports which are subsequently sealed with vinyl snap-in caps.

Lamination
The panels consist of formed metal skins laminated to the insulation under pressure with a structural adhesive.  Insulation is either expanded polystyrene or urethane (polyisocyanurate). This process is carefully monitored to assure a high-quality structural bond that will withstand a wide range of temperature and humidity conditions.

Tongue and Groove
All panels have tongue and groove edges to facilitate assembly and provide a tight, well insulated panel joint.  No wood framing is used.

Panel Gaskets
Flexible vinyl gaskets are permanently bonded on the tongue side of all panels on both the interior and exterior to form a tight seal between panels.  These gaskets are resistant to water, detergent, oil, fats, and sunlight.

Floor panels are constructed with a 16 gauge galvanized steel or an optional .080 aluminum interior skin.  This reinforced floor panel is designed to withstand uniformly distributed loads up to 600 pounds per square foot.  When mobile equipment is used, such as dollies and carts, additional reinforcement is required.  Aluminum tread plate or 10 gauge galvanized steel is recommended.

Facings:
Standard Finishes include:

  • 26 gauge G-90 Galvanized in smooth or stucco embossed
  • White painted 26 gauge G-90 galvanized, stucco embossed high gloss USDA approved
  • .032" Aluminum, stucco embossed
  • 22 gauge 304 #4 polish Stainless Steel
  • 24 gauge 304 #2B Stainless Steel

Expanded Polystyrene has a stable "K" Factor of .22 at a 40 degree mean temperature, with corresponding "R" values of 16.7 for 4" thickness and 25 for 6" thickness.  Nominal density is 1 lb. per cubic foot. Polystyrene core material when tested in a thickness of 4" per ASTM E-84 (UL Procedure 723) has a flame spread of less than 25 and a smoke developed of less than 450.

Urethane (polyisocyanurate) has a "K" factor of .145 when aged for six months, with corresponding "R" values of 27.6 for 4" thickness, and 41.4 for 6" thickness. Nominal density is 2 lbs. per cubic foot.   Note that the "R" value for all urethane (poured, frothed or rigid sheets) declines with age, whereas styrene remains stable.  Urethane core material when tested in a thickness of 4" per ASTM E-84 (UL Procedure 723) has a flame spread of less than 25 and a smoke developed of less than 450.

NSF (Optional)
NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) approved enclosures, constructed with coved wall and floor corners, are available at a slight extra charge.  These enclosures will bear the NSF seal of approval.  Note that galvanized steel is no longer an accepted finish for floors in NSF approved enclosures.

Doors
The standard door unit consists of a hinged door, flush mounted in a 47" wide panel with a clear opening of 34" x 78".  A vapor proof light fixture, light switch with pilot light, and 2" dial thermometer are mounted in the frame.  The light fixture and switch are prewired.  Freezer doors have anti-sweat heater in both the door leaf and the frame.

A replaceable magnetic gasket seals the door at the top and the two sides.  The bottom edge of the door is sealed with a dual neoprene sweep.

Each door has two polished chrome hinges with a cam-lift action. (Optional self-closing spring loaded hinges and door closers are available.)  The door latch handle is polished chrome, positive latching, with an adjustable strike.  An inside safety release handle is provided so the door can be opened from the inside even when padlocked from the outside.

Hinged pallet doors are available in custom sized up to 6 feet wide and 8 feet high.

Sliding doors, single or bi-part, manual or electric operated, are available in a variety of sizes.

Installation
A complete set of drawings are supplied with each walk-in. It is important that the wall panels are level upon installation.  A clearance of 1" should be allowed between the wall panels and existing room walls, as well as a 1" clearance for ceiling panels.
